Cell phone use in library a nuisance

It is hard to believe that Steven DeCinzo could actually think that the large amount of space in the new library makes it hard for patrons to concentrate, as suggested in his July 9 cartoon. The main impediment to sustained concentration in both the crowded temporary library and the new library is the ubiquitous use of cell phones.

This cell phone use was more than a minor nuisance in the crowded temporary facility and remains an issue in the new library. I was recently blasted out of my seat in the new library reading room by a neighboring cell phone page. Perhaps signs such as those used in the Los Gatos Public Library asking, "Have you turned off your cell phone?" would help even the most inconsiderate cell phone user to eventually realize that Saratoga citizens voted for a new, expanded library, not a new, expanded telephone booth!
