Aida, a love triangle story, Disney-style, stops in the South Bay via American Musical Theatre of San Jose for a brief engagement July 23 through Aug. 9 at the Center for Performing Arts while simultaneously selling out Broadway audiences in New York.
The first collaboration of Elton John and Tim Rice since their shared success of The Lion King, this love story also features a Tony awardwinning score but focuses on the emotional entanglements of royalty rather than wildlife. Two princesses—Aida, played by Paulette Ivory, and Amneris, Lisa Brescia—vie for the love of one lucky Egyptian soldier, played by Jeremy Kushnier. Mickey Dolenz of the '60s pop group The Monkees takes the patriarch role of Zoser, the soldier's father.
Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Aida is one of three long-running and award-winning Broadway shows to come from the House of Mouse. On the heals of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King—both adapted from popular animated movies—Aida is based on an ancient legend set on the banks of the Nile River rather than a blockbuster children's cartoon.
