Sundquist

The Rev. Kristin Aline Erlendson Sundquist died of cancer on July 2 at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. She was 60 years old.

Born on March 29, 1943, in San Jose to Ellen Erlendson Sundquist and William Erlendson, Sundquist showed a passion for music at an early age, becoming a child prodigy on the piano. By the age of 13 she had performed as a soloist with the San Jose Symphony Orchestra. Soon after she switched to the organ, which became her favorite instrument.

Sundquist continued to nurture her talents, graduating magna cum laude from San José State University and receiving her master's and doctorate in organ performance from Stanford University. She went on to teach at Mills College and SJSU, all the while performing as a concert organist throughout the Bay Area.

For 20 years Sundquist was the organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in San Jose. It was during this time that she became interested in joining the priesthood. Soon after women were allowed to be ordained as priests in the Episcopal Church, Sundquist pursued her goal and became ordained in 1988. She served in several different churches as chaplain, including St. Andrew's School in Saratoga, where she also taught religion. From 1992 until she died, she was the associate rector, organist and director of music at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Saratoga.

Sundquist was very active with the San Jose Council of Churches, the Saratoga Ministerial Association and the American Guild of Organists, in which she served as the dean of the San Jose chapter and western regional councilor. After being diagnosed with cancer, Sundquist also became active with the Santa Clara County Cancer Society board.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Hal Sundquist, brothers William and John Sundquist, and seven nieces and nephews. Gifts in her memory may be sent to The Music Fund of St. Andrew's Church, PO Box 2789, Saratoga, 95070.
