Ex-major league stars head up staff at local camp

The 12th Camp With the Pros, a summer baseball camp for players ages 7-12, returns to the Santa Clara Valley in July and August.

Camp sessions will be held July 28­Aug. 1 at River Glen Park (Bird and Pine in San Jose) and Aug. 11­15 at the Union Little League Complex (Blossom Hill and Camden in San Jose). Hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, and camp fees are $119 per session.

Camp director is Roger Samuels, a former Branham High School and Santa Clara University star who went on to pitch for the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates. Director of instruction is Mark Cummins, a former Santa Clara University infielder who went on to play professional baseball and has worked as the head baseball coach at Live Oak High School for the past 17 years.

Former major league hurler Ernie Broglio, who won 21 pages in 1960 for the St. Louis Cardinals, will serve as pitching instructor.

Bronco baseball

Santa Clara University will offer two Bronco Baseball Camps for high school players ages 14­18. The camps will run Aug. 1­3 and Aug. 8­10. The cost for each camp is $125 and sessions will focus on hitting, fielding and pitching. SCU head baseball coach Mark O'Brien will head the camp staff consisting of SCU players and coaches. Volleyball camps

The Vision Volleyball Club and Los Gatos High School will team up to host a series of volleyball camps for girls this summer. The camps will feature individual training in volleyball fundamentals and tactics and will stress the basics of team play.

A youth camp for girls in grades 5­9 will be held Aug. 11­15, 9 a.m.­noon, at Los Gatos High ($150); an advanced camp for girls in grades 9­12 will be held Aug. 11­15, 5­8 p.m., at Los Gatos ($150); and an outdoor camp will be held July 30­Aug. 1, 5:30­7:30 p.m., at Los Gatos ($90).

Joe Ripp, who is entering his 11th season as the girls volleyball coach at Los Gatos, is the camp director. Ripp, who has been coaching for 13 years, is also the director for Vision Volleyball.

Soccer camps

Santa Clara University will host a series of summer soccer camps for players ages 6­18 this summer.

Camp dates include: July 28­Aug. 1, residential camp for players ages 14­18; and Aug. 5­8, elite residential camp for players entering their junior and senior years of high school.

Youth football

The Wolverines of the Campbell­Saratoga Youth Football organization will begin practice sessions for the 2003 season on July 26, 10 a.m.­2 p.m., at Prospect High School. Youngsters can also sign up at that time.

Players should provide a birth certificate and physical release from a doctor at the time of registration.

Junior golf

Junior Achievement's 14th annual Golf Classic is slated for Sept. 22 at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club. The event, sponsored by FedEx Freight, will offer a full day of food, fun and prizes beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending after 7 p.m.

All-comers meet

The annual all-comers track and field series return to the Los Gatos High School track this summer. Meets are scheduled for Thursdays, 5:30 p.m. for field events and 6 p.m. for track events, through Aug. 14. The cost is $4 for athletes and $2 for spectators. Rowing classes

The Los Gatos Rowing Club will offer Junior Summer Learn-to-Row classes open to all seventh through tenth graders interested in rowing. A session is slated for July 28 to Aug. 1. The program runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with lunch included. It will conclude with a 500-meter race between each of the shells on the final day.

The class will be held at the Los Gatos Rowing Club boathouse at the Lexington Reservoir and will cost $250. Contact John Martin at 408-866-6570.


Women's golf

The 61st annual Santa Clara County Women's Golf Championships will return to the area on Aug. 4­5 when tournament play gets under way at the San Jose Country Club.
