Hockey stars
A couple local athletes were rewarded for their play in the National Futures field hockey tournament held July 37 in Virginia Beach, Va. Bailey Richardson from Los Gatos and Katie Sang from Cupertino were selected for the under-16 national team that will compete in the Junior Olympics in Detroit from July 22 through Aug. 2. The two girls helped lead their 16-and-under team from California to a 10th-place finish in the futures tournament, which was an improvement over last year's 13th-place finish. The team would have likely finished higher, had it not been for two narrow defeats—one coming on a last-minute game-winning goal and another on a penalty corner at the end of regulation.
The under-19 California team also boasted several local stars in Nicole Ng from Saratoga, Courtney Furia from Los Gatos and Jamie Sibilla of Cupertino. The under-19 members do not have the option to play in the Junior Olympics, but Ng was selected to play for the under-19 national "B" team.
