William Kelly

William J. Kelly died on Aug. 27 at his home in Saratoga. He was 95.

Born on March 29, 1908, in Canton, N.Y., Kelly was the son of Mary Donovan and Timothy Kelly.

After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Ogdensburg, N.Y., he worked as a reporter for the Ogdensburg Advance and later the Watertown Times. In 1930 he graduated from Columbia University School of Journalism and became a reporter for the International News Service.

After marrying Patricia Dorn in 1932, Kelly continued to work throughout the country for the INS before becoming an associate editor for Colliers Magazine and then editor of Collier's American Magazine. Before retiring in 1975, he worked briefly as a press officer for the International Conference of Teamsters in Washington, D.C. Upon retirement, Kelly moved to Saratoga.

He is survived by sisters Margaret Lebeau and Mary Kelly and brother John Kelly of Ogdensburg, daughter Patricia Caudle of Cupertino, daughter and son-in-law Barbara and John Duffy of Isle La Motte, Vt., sons William J. Kelly Jr. of Malibu and Brian J. and his spouse Julie Kelly of Saratoga, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services have been held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William J. Kelly Scholarship Fund, Johnson State College, Johnson, Vt., 05656. The fund was begun by Kelly in 2001 to provide scholarships for students of writing and journalism who have graduated from St. Lawrence County, N.Y., high schools and are attending Johnson State College.
