Local student wins prestigious award

The U.S. Achievement Academy announced that Matt Barnes, 18, of Los Gatos has been chosen as a national award winner in the science and scholar-at-large categories. The academy recognized fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students for this award.

Barnes attends the Gow School, a private, all-male middle and high school focusing on special education, in East Aurora, N.Y. He was nominated for the award by his physics teacher, Duruhan Badraslioglu.

The selection criteria for the award included the student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability and his teacher's recommendation.

Barnes is the son of Jeri and Doug Barnes of Los Gatos. His grandparents are Joy and Bob Weiss of Saratoga and Evelyn and Rohl Barnes, also of Saratoga.
