Falcons off to a hot 2-0 start in '03 season
By Dick Sparrer
Kurt Heinrich has good reason to be happy. His offense is playing well, his defense is playing well ... and his Saratoga High School football team has opened the 2003 season with back-to-back victories.

Saratoga, a winner over Leigh in the first week of the season, pulled out a 21-14 win over Mountain View last week to improve to 2-0 in non-league play.

"It's going well," said Heinrich of the young season. And things certainly went well last Saturday night against Mountain View.

Dayne McGee ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns and Brett Granum raced for 100 yards and a TD to lead the Falcons to the win over the Spartans.

"McGee had another great game," said Heinrich of his senior back who had run for nearly 200 yards in the 41-28 win over Leigh to open the season.

McGee shot over from the 1-yard line to score Saratoga's first touchdown of the night. A 55-yard pass from Granum to Ryan Newberry had set up the TD.

"It was right on the money," said Heinrich of the pass. "It was a nice throw, and Ryan made a nice catch."

A couple of plays later McGee blasted over for the touchdown and Eric Frederickson kicked the first of his three extra points.

A turnover gave the Spartans good field position at the Saratoga 10 later in the period, and Mountain View capitalized with a game-tying score.

But then Granum broke an option 60 yards for a touchdown to put the Falcons back on top 14-7.

"He really ran the option well," said Heinrich of his senior quarterback. "He spread it out, and athletically he made something happen underneath. He's a good player."

Saratoga closed out its scoring in the third quarter when McGee ran one in from 18 yards out and Frederickson booted his third point after.

Mountain View made it close with another touchdown, but the Falcons stopped the Spartans on their way to a possible game-tying score late in the contest, thanks to a couple of big plays by defensive tackle Brent Walter. He forced a fumble and came through with clutch quarterback sack to stop the Spartans in their tracks.

"He was a phenom," said Heinrich of Walter. "He must have had a half dozen sacks. He was a man."

Walter led a superb defensive showing for the Falcons.

"Our defense won the game for us," said Heinrich, praising the work of defensive coordinator Kevin Tanner. "Our defense was fantastic."

The coach also singled out Newberry for his performance at safety, saying that he "made a ton of open field tackles for us."

Heinrich added that Matt and Chris Greene each came through with quarterback sacks, and he said that Ryan Hall played well.

"But the whole defense really played well," he said, praising the efforts of Tom Cummins, Javier Meza, Adam Sato, and junior linebacker T.J. Florence, along with Darren Lee, Paul Culbertson and Phil Spencer in the secondary.

Offensively, the coach was pleased with his club's running game, singling out Spencer and Newberry along with McGee and Granum.

"But we've got to get out throwing game going," he added. He's anxious to get the back downfield into the hands of capable receivers Frederickson, Culbertson and Tyler Rothenberg.

Up front, Heinrich was pleased with his club's offensive performance.

"The line did a good job," said Heinrich, singling out Sato for a strong showing at guard. "They were steady and did what they had to do."

The win came a week after Saratoga had dismantled Leigh in its season opener.

"Leigh was real big for us," said Heinrich. "It's always nice to beat a big school with such a strong program."

Saratoga will get another chance this week when the Falcons visit Milpitas on Sept. 26, 7:30 p.m.

"They're athletic, like usual," said Heinrich of the Trojans. "They're fast, big and creative offensively. They cause some real match-up problems for us."

Saratoga will play its first ever game on the new turf field on the Milpitas High School campus. In the past, the Trojans have played their home games at the Milpitas Sports Complex.
