| The Sovereign Order of St. John kicked off the Bay Area's fundraising season with a "A Champagne Festival" Sept. 6 at Mont Du Paix, the Los Altos Hills estate of Chevalier Jack and Nancy Horton. Some 225 guests enjoyed caviar, oysters, champagne, music, dinner and a lively auction. Thanks to underwriting and the auction, some $100,000 was raised for the construction of an infirmary of the San Juan Bautista Child Development Center in San Jose. |

| The San Jose History Museum at Kelly Park was an appropriate setting for an event that has almost become a part of local history. Rotary of San Jose staged its annual barbecue amid the city's restored buildings and old light tower on Sept. 10. |
