Redwood Middle School gets approval for new roofs
By Lisa Toth
They were really on top of things at the Saratoga Union School District board meeting last week.

The board unanimously approved a bid to begin construction on new roofs at Redwood Middle School. All the roofs at the school that are not new or refurbished will be replaced if all goes according to plan by the end of October.

"If we don't replace all the roofs, it's going to look like a patchwork quilt," said the district's Chief Business Official Ellen Tipton.

She encouraged the board to vote in favor of the bid they passed, as opposed to another bid option that would have only replaced the roofs over the boys' and girls' locker rooms and covered the cost of skylights.

After the bid to replace all the roofs had passed, Tipton said they hope the roofs will be finished before the winter weather rolls in and the rain starts. The roofs at Redwood and Foothill Elementary School were last replaced in 1991 for a combined total of about $149,000.

But with recent jumps in the costs of construction materials, the new roof being contracted by Best Roofing at Redwood is estimated to cost $227,606. The funding for the roofs doesn't come from the district's general fund, but rather from the Measure L Bond of $19.9 million passed in March 2002 that can only be used toward construction causes, Tipton said.

In other action, the board said farewell to Loree Ferla, who leaves the district after working for five years as an office assistant. Ferla resigned from her position to pursue a full-time job at Capital Toyota. District Superintendent Lane Weiss thanked Ferla at the board meeting for a job well done. He said her positive attitude and continual smile made her a joy to work with.
