Saratoga girls win volleyball tournament championship
By Dick Sparrer
Saratoga has one of the better girls volleyball teams in the Central Coast Section this fall. And to prove it, the Falcons went out recently and won the championship in the Saratoga/Westmont Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

Right side hitter Bryte Nielson hammered home 12 kills to lead the Falcons to a 25-10, 25-14 win over Leigh in the championship match. Saratoga won four straight matches to take the tourney title.

The Falcons opened the event with a 25-10, 15-14 win over Mt. Pleasant. Nielson and middle blocker Nina Sevastopoulos finished with eight kills apiece in the win.

Sevastopoulos came back with 10 kills to lead the Falcons to a 25-17, 25-12 win over Aragon a match later.

In the semifinals against Valley Christian, Nielson finished with 10 kills to lead the Falcons past the Warriors 25-16, 25-12.

That set the stage for the lopsided win over the Leigh in the finals.

The four wins, along with easy wins over Santa Clara and Lynbrook in league play last week, helped Saratoga improve to 13-1 in the young season.

In the tournament, Nielson was the leader for the Falcons with averages of 11 kills, 17 digs, three blocks and three aces per match, and Sarah Nguyen was a team leader with her averages of 25 assists and two aces per match.

Sevastopoulos averaged nine kills and three blocks a match and outside hitter Hannah Gladwell boasted averages of six kills, eight digs and three aces per match. Jordan Henry had an average of four kills

Defensive specialists Lea Anthony (eight digs a match) and Barbi Li (six digs) were also among the team leaders along with Amanda Anthony (three kills, eight digs and two aces per match).

Sarah Inman, Page Henry, Michelle Vetrone, Kacy Bonnet and Sarah Svoboda also contributed for the Falcons in the tournament.

The Falcons, league champs in 2001 and runners-up last season, will get back to league action this week when they host Fremont Sept. 30, 6:30 p.m. Saratoga faces a bye on Thursday, but will be back on the floor on Oct. 6 at Homestead.
