County's waste disposal day

Residents looking for a place to properly dispose of household waste products can do so at the household hazardous waste event on Oct. 25. The event, which will be administered through Santa Clara County, will be located at the first lot on the West Valley College campus on Fruitvale Avenue between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Items that will be accepted include automobile products, fertilizers, pesticides, oven cleaners and detergents.

Residents with disposable products must make an appointment before dropping off items.

Hakone receives national honor

Hakone Gardens will be one of 12 nationally known landmarks to be included in the Save America's Treasures initiative, which is spearheaded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. With the award, the garden will receive a portion of the $1 million grant distributed by the television network, HGTV.

The 90-year old garden will be among other historic sites, such as Eleanor Roosevelt's home in Val Kill, the Florida winter retreat of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford and Andrew Johnson's first homes.

Also, tune in to KRON-TV on Oct. 25. Hakone Gardens will be featured on the television show Bay Area Backroads.


Speaker to share Chinese history

Connie Yu will be the guest lecturer at the upcoming meeting for the Los Gatos and Saratoga Branch of the American Association of University Women.

The meeting will be held on Oct.14 at the Saratoga Library Community Room at 1 p.m.

Yu will present a slide show of how the Chinese community evolved throughout the years and how it grew to be an integral part of the community today.
