Wonderfully wacky play at WVC

West Valley College is bringing the words of award-winning playwright David Ives to the stage, as students perform Time Flies and other plays, a comedy about love, work, and make-believe from a slightly alternative perspective. The performance is recommended for older audiences, as it contains mature language and subject matter. Performances will be held at 8 p.m. on Oct. 17, 18, 24, 25, 26, and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 19 and 26. Foothill Club hosts UC prof

The Saratoga Foothill Club is kicking off its 2003­04 public lecture series with a presentation on Oct. 23 by Bharati Mukherjee, an author and professor of English and comparative literature at UC-Berkeley.

From 10 a.m. to noon, Mukherjee will speak on her prolific body of work, which has focused on immigration and the struggles of Indian women.

The event will be held at 20399 Park Place, Saratoga.

A $5 donation will be accepted at the door.

Jazz flutist visits WVC

Acclaimed jazz flutist and composer Horace-Alexander Young will make a special appearance at the West Valley College Theater on Oct. 17 at 8 p.m., accompanied by the West Valley College Jazz Band.

Tickets are available at the door for $10, with profits supporting music programs at West Valley College.

Saratoga library has new exhibit

Books won't be the only things to check out this fall at the Saratoga Library.

As part of an effort spearheaded by Anna Lum of Pacific Scribes Calligraphers and Betty Peck of the Saratoga Arts Commission, over 50 framed scrolls will be on display.

The artful scrolls are written in 20 different languages, praising the value and importance of reading. The exhibit will run until Nov. 25.

Lions Club hosts special luncheon

The Saratoga Lions Club will host a special luncheon on Oct. 21 at the Florentine Restaurant, 14510 Big Basin Way, where the service activities pursued by the club will be discussed. Chris Morris of the Los Gatos Lions Club, Chuck Hart of the Cupertino Host Lions Club and Marge Bunyard of the Saratoga Lions will make presentations.
