Edmund Lesly Butlar of Saratoga died Oct. 1. He was 80.

A native of Hungary, Butlar was a 39-year resident of Saratoga, where he was involved with St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, a respected teacher of European history, and an avid rose gardener.

He is survived by his daughters Leslie and Katrina, son-in-law Tim, and two grandchildren.

Donations in his name may be made to the Memorial Garden Fund, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 121 Second St., San Francisco, 94105.

Hart

Shirley Bolt Hart, formerly of Saratoga, died after a long illness on Sept. 21 at Feather River Hospital in Paradise, Calif.

Born on May 22, 1928, in Los Angeles, she graduated from Burlingame High School and the medical assistant program at West Valley College.

She married Alden L. Hart in 1947, and was a medical assistant and an accounting clerk. She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for several years and was skilled at a variety of crafts and home-improvement projects.

She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Allagree of Magalia, Calif., Martha Hart of Eureka, Calif., and Bonnie Hart of McKenna, Wash., son Larry Hart of Magalia, brothers Charles Bolt of Burlingame, Ronald Bolt of Pleasanton, and Albert Bolt of Chico, and several grandchildren.

Raisa Kocher

Raisa Ravve Kocher of Saratoga died Oct. 6. She was 85.

Born in Russia and raised in China, Kocher studied at the University of Berlin, Germany, until World War II broke out and her family fled to the United States.

Kocher spoke no English, but enrolled at USC and spent a year taking classes for no credit until she learned the language. She supported herself by playing piano with the MGM studio orchestra. Kocher received her doctorate in optometry in 1941.

She married George Kocher in the 1950s, went back to school at San José State University and became an interior designer. Kocher and her husband moved to Saratoga in 1952. She was president of the Saratoga Merchants' Association, a coordinator of the Saratoga Rotary Art Show, a life member and past president of the Soroptimist International of Los Gatos­Saratoga and a director of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by her brother Dr. Abraham Ravve and his wife, Phyliss, of Niles, Ill.; daughter Mischel Kocher Postas of Campbell, son Richard Ravve Kocher of Ramsey, N.J., son-in-law John Postas, daughter-in-law Fulda Kocher, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
