Couple celebrates 65 years of marriage

As Art and Irene Bielmaier know, a good sense of humor goes a long way. After 65 years of marriage, the couple seems to have a close connection, most likely the result of their lively, laughter-inducing banter.

"Hey," Art says to Irene sitting next to him, "I'm married to you? Who are you?"

"Lady Godiva," Irene replies with a half-hearted wave of the hand.

"Then where's your horse?" Art retorts with a big grin.

"Out eating hay," Irene chuckles and then looks out the window.

Art immediately follows her gaze. "What are you doing now? Looking for another husband?"

Growing up in Buffalo, N.Y., the two unknowingly lived three blocks away from each other. It wasn't until mutual friends invited them up to a resort in Thunder Bay, Canada, that Art and Irene met and soon started to date.

In 1938, after three years of courtship, the couple married on Thanksgiving Day. They were only 19 years old.

"We had it on Thanksgiving because that was our only day off. It was depression time—you were lucky to get a day off," Art says.

Although Irene can't quite remember what it was that attracted her to Art, she says they always seemed compatible.

Art likes to joke about why he proposed. "I thought she had money and she thought I had money," he says. "But I was on welfare."

Irene denies that fact, saying instead, "It was just time to get married."

The couple had a small ceremony with friends and family in Buffalo, and then tried to drive to New York City for a honeymoon.

Unfortunately, they were hit by a police car, which busted the car's headlights and damaged the radiator. Art says he used a spotlight on the side of his car; however, they were not able to make it past Rochester, 75 miles outside Buffalo.

To make ends meet, Art became a tool engineer, while Irene worked as a private secretary. Art advanced in his career over the years, eventually working for Hewlett Packard when the couple moved out to California.

Art and Irene had become tired of the harsh Buffalo weather, and decided to move to the Bay Area. The couple had fallen in love with the area during one of their three-week driving tours through the U.S. Friends also lived in Saratoga, giving them the final incentive to purchase a house in Mountain View.

"We love it here," Irene says. "It's so cold in Buffalo."

Eventually, the couple grew too old to take care of the house by themselves and moved into Our Lady of Fatima in Saratoga.

Although unable to continue past hobbies of travel and photography, Art and Irene seem content—passing the days with television, games, and, of course, each other.
