Nuia leads Prospect to win over Warriors
By Dick Sparrer
Jeremy Nuia capped his senior season with a big night, and it was enough to lead Prospect to a rousing 29-14 non-league win over Yerba Buena on the final day of the 2003 season.

Nuia carried 13 times for 183 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Panthers to just their second win of the season. Prospect finished the year 2-8 after posting an 0-6 record in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

"It's been a very interesting year for our program," said Prospect coach Mike Carrozzo. "Due to our inexperience, it's taken us a very long time to play as a team. This last game, we finally got it right."

"Our offensive line did an outstanding job making holes for the backs all night long," he added. "Jeremy Nuia ran with great determination. He is finally healthy and showed the kind of back he really is."

Nuia scored on runs of 20, 69 and 54 yards to lead the Panthers to the victory.

Kenny Strickland added a 64-yard touchdown run and finished the night with 83 yards on three carries. Scott Skinner supported with 41 yards on nine tries and Matt Lamb had a 15-yard run.

"Matt actually had a 54-yard TD run called back for a motion penalty," said the coach. "Matt is a sophomore, one of the smallest members of our team, and continues to play with incredible heart. He has been a two way starter for us all year [at cornerback and wingback] and has done an incredible job."

Quarterback Troy Varanchodom attempted just five passes, completing two—to Kyilo Hulton for 13 yards and to Garrett Karren for 12.

Karren was the defensive leader with 11 tackles.

"[Karren] has totaled 112 tackles this year as a junior defensive end," said Carrozzo. "He has never left a field where he didn't give it everything he had."

Inside linebacker Travis Chun finished with 10 tackles, Andrew Shouse had nine, Nuia added eight, Marcus Laffen six and J.P. Nation five.

"Yerba Buena had very low numbers but had tremendous heart and gave us all we could handle," said Carrozzo. "They battled all night long."

"All in all it was a good night to finish the season on," summed up the coach.
