Services will be held for Kaitlyn

Family and friends will celebrate the life of Kaitlyn Langstaff, the beloved 9-year-old Saratogan who touched the hearts of many in the community, at a public memorial service in January.

Kaitlyn passed away on Dec. 17 in her home from complications associated with a rare illness called toxic epidermal necrolysis, a severe form of Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

"She was at peace," said Kaitlyn's mother, Kerry, who was present, with other loved ones, when Kaitlyn passed away.

Date and time of the memorial service have not yet been determined.

Collection of trees for recycling

Green Valley Disposal on University Avenue in Los Gatos will be collecting Christmas trees for recycling from Dec. 27 to Jan. 10. Residents can also leave trees out on the curb for pick-up on trash-collection day. Trees taller than 6 feet must be cut in half. All decorations, tinsel and nails must be removed. Those living in unincorporated areas can call the recycling hotline at 1.800.533.8414 for more information or visit www.ReduceWaste.org.

Officers look for drunken drivers

Deputies from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office will be doing their part in keeping those on the streets safe this holiday season. Deputies will be checking for drunken drivers on Jan. 2 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Drivers on Prospect Road near Saraglen Drive should expect to be stopped, depending on the volume of traffic. The checkpoint is in conjunction with the Avoid the 13 Campaign.

Dog park topic of parks meeting

The Saratoga Parks and Recreation Commission will be discussing several items at its next meeting on Jan. 5, one of which is the possibility of establishing a local park for dogs. The meeting is expected to last from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the administrative conference room on Fruitvale Avenue.
