Make way for a diva in the making when TV's American Idol star Frenchie Davis plays the lead role in American Musical Theatre San Jose's Dreamgirls Jan. 925.
Davis, who was ousted early on in last year's contest to find the next pop sensation, caught critical attention for a larger-than-life stage presence and soulful voice. She was eliminated from the competition when it was discovered that the performer had posed for an Internet porn site when she was 18 years old.
The senior and musical theater major at Howard University may have missed out on the recording contract prize, but the media exposure appears to have opened doors of opportunity around the country. She made her Broadway debut last year in Rent and will stop in San Jose, Sacramento and Seattle with Dreamgirls.
Davis plays Effie, the singer dropped from a rising Motown girl group, The Dreamettes, a story based on the actual rise of the '60s girl group the Supremes. Key themes from the show may strike familiar chords with Davis as she explores the ups and downs of show business.
Dreamgirls explores the triumphs and heartaches of making it to the top in the fickle entertainment industry.
American Musical Theatre of San Jose presents "Dreamgirls" Jan. 925 at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose. Tickets are $44.50$75.50. Call 408.453.7108 or go to www.amtsj.org for more information.
