Police arrest student on campus with bomb materials
By My Ngo and Lisa Toth
Deputies from the Westside Sheriff's Substation arrested a 16-year-old male student at Saratoga High School on Jan. 16. The student broke into a chemistry lab and stole chemicals intended for bomb-making, according to Terrance Helm, spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's office.

School officials later filed a temporary restraining order against the student, prohibiting him from going near campus.

The juvenile, whose name has not been released, was charged with counts of burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of materials with intent to bomb and obstructing an officer.

Helm confirmed that the student was caught running away from the school's science building and from deputies, who initially responded to an alarm that sounded in the lab. The student was questioned by authorities and released to his parents later that night.

Saratoga High School Principal Dr. Kevin Skelly would not respond to questions about the criminal intent to protect the confidentiality of the student. The case is still under investigation. Despite the incident, Skelly maintains that the security of the students on campus is not at risk.

"I think the police handled the apprehension of the student in a responsible way," Skelly said. "And I think Saratoga High School is a safe place."
