Alfa Eastburn

Alfa Joyce Eastburn died peacefully at her home in Los Gatos on Jan. 23. She was 85.

Born in Arcata, Calif., she attended Humboldt State University and moved to the Bay Area with her husband, the late Samuel Eastburn, just before World War II. When her husband secured employment with the U.S. Navy at Lockheed Martin in 1957, the couple moved to Saratoga.

An accomplished equestrian, Eastburn showed her horses on the Northern California circuit through the 1960s and '70s, and her Five-Gaited Saddlebred and Tennessee walking horse won several championships at the Grand Nationals at the Cow Palace in Daly City.

She was also an avid community volunteer for O'Connor Hospital, the YWCA and the Happy Dragon Thrift Shop, and she was a member of the Los Gatos History Club. She was a member of a neighborhood coffee and sewing group formed in the late 1950s that still meets today.

In later years, Eastburn and her husband traveled extensively, visiting China, Africa, the Greek Islands, Central America, Belize, and the Caribbean. They were active members of the Redwood City Yacht Club.

She is survived by her daughters Jo Ann Perry of Cameron Park, Susan Boyce of Saratoga and Nancy Graham of San Jose; grandchildren Eric Graham of Santa Barbara, David Graham of San Jose, Sharon Boyce of Saratoga and Melissa Graham of Bremerton, Wash.; and great-grandchildren Nolan Graham and McKinlay Claire Graham, both of San Jose, and twins Ava Jean and James Bender of Saratoga.

Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley in San Jose.
