Antolin pins title at league mat finals
By Dick Sparrer
Dean Antolin finished fourth in the Central Coast Section wrestling finals a year ago.

But the Westmont senior has bigger plans in this, his senior wrestling season. And he took the first step last weekend toward making those plans come true.

Antolin is going back to the section tournament, this time as a champion from the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Antolin won a championship at 191 pounds at the Blossom Valley Athletic League tournament on Feb. 7 at Leland to earn a return trip to CCS finals.

The senior sensation was one of seven Westmont placers at the BVAL finals, helped the Warriors finish third in the team standings behind Oak Grove and Mt. Pleasant.

Antolin beat Anthony Avellino of Oak Grove in the 191-pound finals to claim his individual title.

Also placing in the league tournament for Westmont were Hiep Dinh, second at 147 pounds; Alex Kolykhalov, third at 154; Preston Falbo, fourth at 137; Tyler Porras, fourth at 217; Tito Lopez, fifth at 105; and Ramsey Habib, fifth at 277.

Todd Woodward of Del Mar was third at 162 pounds, William Cotter was fourth at 142 pounds for the Dons.

William Hoppner of Prospect was fifth at 137 pounds, and teammates Jacob Gilford at 142 and Garrett Karren at 191 were each sixth.

Westmont had tied James Lick for the league dual match championship. The Warriors edged the Comets 34-30 in the final match of the regular season, leaving the two squads even at the top of the pack with matching 7-1 records.

"This was wrestling at its best from both schools," said Westmont coach Dennis Mamola.

Antolin, Porras, Habib, Lopez and Stefan Fowler came through with "outstanding team performances," said the coach.

"I was truly proud of our team and coaching staff," added Mamola, praising the efforts of assistant coaches Dean Antolin Sr., Terry Vierra and Mitch Vierra. "It's great to be part of such a dedicated group of athletes who appreciate the meaning of hard work, and the results you achieve from maintaining realistic expectations of personal goals."

Pins by Lopez at 103, Raymond Michelson at 130, Falbo at 135 and Kolykhalov at 152 sparked the Warriors to a lopsided 61-14 win over Pioneer in a dual match earlier in the year. Dinh and Porras each posted decision wins.

In the BVAL junior varsity finals a week earlier, Westmont won the team title in the tournament held at San Jose Academy.

The same day, the Westmont girls team competed in the Regional Championships at San Mateo High School, and Amy Horowitz at 195 pounds, Brittney Gugliemini at 146 and Jessina Pena at 110 each won regional titles. The three talented Warriors will advance to the girls state tournament on Feb. 67.

"Westmont history is being made," said Mamola of the girls program at the school. The Warriors finished second in the team standings at the regionals.

Amanda Nelson finished sixth at 110 pounds for Westmont.

Falcons fall

The Saratoga wrestling team dropped a one-sided 55-10 decision to Palo Alto in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division dual match competition last week.

Matt Chabrier won a 9-0 decision at 152 pounds and Brent Walter won by forfeit at 189 for Saratoga's only victories on the night.

Chabrier and Walter figure to be two of Saratoga's top candidates to finish among the placers when the teams of the SCVAL gather at Los Altos on Feb. 14 for the league finals.

Saratoga wraps up the dual match season against Los Gatos on Feb. 12 on the Falcons' home mat. The highlight of the match is expected to come at 189 pounds where Walter will take on Gatos' Ivan Batinich.
