Stanford students culminate seminar with 'Picasso to Thiebaud' exhibit
By Estelle Hayes
Local collectors are bringing a taste of the New York and European art scene to the Peninsula. The show, Picasso to Thiebaud, features 65 paintings and scultures from the private collections of more than 40 Stanford University alumni.

The Cantor Arts Center's show on Stanford's campus should exemplify its director and curator's strengthened commitment to modern and contemporary art--representing European and America art movements including cubism, abstract expressionism, pop and minimalism.

The exhibit opens Feb. 18 and runs through June 20. In addition to Thiebaud and Picasso, the show features pieces by Pollock, Warhol and Lichtenstein.

A new venture for the university, Picasso to Thiebaud represents an academic year's worth of studies by eight students, who worked with museum director Thomas K. Seligman and curator Hilarie Faberman to complete a seminar class focused on the nuts and bolts of coordinating an art exhibition. Students created a fully illustrated color catalog, based on personal interviews with the alumni/donors. Students in the "Anatomy of an Exhibition" class also will conduct tours throughout the show.

The Cantor Arts Center is open Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays until 8 p.m. Admission is free. Call 650.723.4177 or go to www.stanford.edu/dept/ccva/ for more information.
