Second Harvest Food Bank calls donation requests unauthorized
By Grant Shellen
Due to unauthorized solicitation of donations in its name, a local food bank is warning Saratoga and Los Gatos residents not to contribute to any door-to-door solicitation for food or money on its behalf.

Officials at Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties were contacted by several residents who received fliers asking that food and monetary donations be left on their doorsteps for pickup.

According to spokeswoman Jenny Luciano, a Saratoga couple first contacted Second Harvest because they suspected that the fliers, bearing the organization's name, were not legitimate. Though the name on the flier contained a slight variation, Luciano said it was "relatively clear they were trying to solicit donations in our name."

Another woman contacted the food bank because the donations she left on her doorstep had not been picked up.

The organization issued a press release Feb. 27 stating that, with the exception of the Letter Carriers' Food Drive in May and the Scouting for Food drive run by Boy Scouts in November, the bank does not ask for donations door-to-door.

Residents with questions are asked to contact Second Harvest at 408.266.8866.
