Alicia Follmar has run to more than her share of victories on the track and the cross country trails for the Saratoga Falcons.
And as she prepares for the 2004 high school track season, one thing is certain—there are more victories to come.
Follmar is the defending state champion in the 1,600 meters, and the junior figures to be the girl to beat this spring as the runners line up for another season.
Follmar was just a sophomore when she surprised the track community by backing up a Central Coast Section title with a win at state. She outran Amanda Thornberry of Valley Christian to finish first at CCS in 4:52.74, then bettered her time by more than a second to beat Lindsay Allen of College Park to the tape in the state finals in 4:51.47.
Now Follmar is back to try to do it all again as a junior, and she's one of a handful of top young performers on the Saratoga squad.
Juniors Follmar, Gwen Belomy, Amanda Van Hoesen and Jordana Dreyfuss join sophomore Caroline Charles as top prospects on the Saratoga girls track and field team this spring.
Seniors William Alleshouse and Tom Cummins head up the cast of solid returners on the boys varsity squad. Juniors Hari Subramaniam and Phil Spencer and sophomore Tyler Williams are other top prospects at Saratoga.
Follmar is a defending state champion who will lead the Saratoga effort in the distance events. Van Hoesen was a CCS qualifier in the shot put last spring and Belomy qualified for CCS in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
Dreyfuss is a sprinter who figures to star for the Falcons in the 100 and 200, and Charles is a newcomer to the varsity who is a solid prospect in the 200 and 400.
Alleshouse, Subramaniam and Cummins were all CCS qualifiers for the Saratoga boys team last spring. Alleshouse placed fifth in the 400 meters in 50.67 and he also qualified for the section meet in the 200. Subramaniam was a CCS qualifier in the 3,200 meters and Cummins qualified in the discus.
Spencer and Williams are talented sprinters expected to compete in the 100 and 200.
The Falcons will open the 2004 track season this week when the visit Fremont on March 11, 3 p.m. Saratoga will then compete in the annual K-Bell coming
up March 13 at the Los Gatos High School track.
