Chris Hornberger wasn't taking any chances.

So not only did the Saratoga senior throw a complete game against Gunn last week, but he also ripped a couple of hits and knocked in a run to lead the Falcons to a tight 8-7 win over the Titans in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Hornberger gave up 10 hits, but only two of Gunn's seven runs were earned as the Falcons weathered the storm despite committing six errors in the field. Hornberger struck out five in the win.

The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead in the second, but Gunn moved in front with two in the third. The clubs matched two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, but Saratoga scored two runs in the sixth to take the lead. Hornberger put down the Titans in the seventh to claim the win.

Saratoga, now 2-3 in the division and 3-7 for the year, was to visit Santa Clara on March 30 and will host Monta Vista on April 2, 3:30 p.m., in a league game.

Over on the softball field, the Falcons pushed their season record to 4-3 with an 8-2 non-league win over Silver Creek. Nikki Franchi tossed a 2-hitter for the win, striking out 15 along the way. She allowed single runs in the fourth and seventh.

The hurler also led an eight-hit Saratoga offensive attack with a double and two singles.

Saratoga was to get back to El Camino Division play this week, traveling to Santa Clara on March 30. The Falcons will head to Los Gatos on March 31, 3:30 p.m., for a key non-league game before returning home on April 1 to host Cupertino at 3:30 p.m.

Follmar wins

Saratoga super junior Alicia Follmar added another gold medal to her collection on March 27 when she raced to a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter run at the Stanford Invitational. Follmar covered the distance in 4:55.21 to finish more than four seconds ahead of second-place Lauren Mulkey of Woodcreek.

Earlier in the week, Follmar won the 400 in 62.7 and the high jump at 4-6 to lead the Saratoga girls to a 76-50 win over Santa Clara in an El Camino Division dual meet.

Senior Lauren Belomy was a double winner for the Falcons, taking the 1,600 in 5:40 and the 800 in 2:35.4, and Gwen Belomy won the 300 hurdles in 51.6.

Kenna Couch was tops in the 3,200-meter run in 13:37.8 and the Falcons won both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Junior Amanda VanHoesen took the shot put with a 29-11 effort and Shasha Du won the long jump at 11-7.

The Saratoga boys, meanwhile, lost a 79-43 decision to Santa Clara. Hari Subramaniam and Tom Cummins were the only winners for the Falcons.

Subramaniam was first in the 3,200 in 10:51 and Cummins was tops in the discus at 135-2. Both were Central Coast Section qualifiers in the events last season for the Falcons.

Saratoga will head to Cupertino on April 1, 3 p.m., for a league dual meet against the Pioneers.

Golfers win three

Michael Lai, Matt Marshall and Shaun Pienkos were top scorers last week as the Saratoga boys golf team hammered out three El Camino Division victories.

Lai shared medalist honors with Marshall in Saratoga's 200-265 win over Santa Clara at the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Center. The two Falcons each finished nine holes at 2-over par 38.

Earlier in the week, Pienkos had carded a 36 to finish 2-over par at the Saratoga Country Club in a 195-234 win over the Bruins.

Saratoga returned to the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Center to finish the week with a 199-209 win over Wilcox. Lai fired a 2-over 38 to share medalist honors with Joe Yagmourain of the Chargers.

Saratoga is now 8-0 in league competition.
