It will be a light-hearted evening of practical jokes and mistaken identities played against the romantic background of Viennese waltzes when Opera San José presents 14 performances of the Johann Strauss II opera Die Fledermaus April 10 through May 2.
The show marks the end of the 200304 season and the company's final run at Montgomery Theatre, the theater that's been home to the opera company for years. With the renovation of the historic California Theatre nearing completion, the company will launch its 200405 season in its new home in September.
The popular Die Fledermaus turns into a classic comedy of errors when philandering husband Gabriel attends a masked ball to flirt with none other than his own wife, Rosalinde, who's shown up after being caught with her own long-lost-love by the police who were actually looking for her husband--but end up arresting the wrong man.
The arresting police officer doesn't realize the mistake he's made until Gabriel shows up to turn himself in for a prior crime after one last fling at the party. Confused? Don't worry, hilarity ensues with all the added bonus of elaborate costumes and beautiful Viennese waltzes.
Opera San Jose presents Die Fledermaus April 10 through May 2 at the Montgomery Theatre in downtown San Jose. Tickets are $43$63. call 408.437.4450 or go to www.operasj.org for more information.
