The Nast family hit the road for a little exercise a couple of weekends ago. But their jog up Highway 9 from Saratoga to Los Gatos was more than just a Sunday family fun run—Rob and Liz Nast and their daughter, Katie, were competing in the 27th annual Great Race on April 4.
And compete they did. Rob Nast ended up among the 20 finishers overall and Katie and Liz Nast were in the top 10 among female placers as the Saratoga clan combined for a rather impressive family finish in the 4mile run sponsored by the Rotary Club of Los Gatos.
Felton's Chris Zieman was the overall winner, covering the distance in a blistering 19:28.5. Zieman outsprinted Kevin Pierpoint of Palo Alto down the final stretch on N. Santa Cruz Avenue to win the Great Race crown. Pierpoint was a close second in 19:29.3.
Joe Sanders of San Jose, a winner in the Almaden Valley Athletic Club's Super Sprint Triathlon on March 13, raced to third overall in 20:00.0 with Alan Jackson of Los Gatos fourth in 20:38.0.
A field of 1,793 registered runners took off from Big Basin Way in downtown Saratoga that Sunday morning, racing up Highway 9 before taking a right turn on N. Santa Cruz Avenue in Los Gatos. Zieman was the first runner to the finish line at Bean Avenue.
Stephanie Bambury of San Jose outran Lisa Lord of Los Gatos to the tape in the female competition. Bambury won the women's title in 24:06.9 with Lord a close second in 24:21.9.
Los Gatos and Saratoga runners dominated the top 10 in women's action. Kristina Park of San Jose was third in 24:35.2 with Los Gatos runners nailing the next four spots—Helena Walden fourth in 25:42.4, Julie Rohloff fifth in 25:47.9, Honor Fetherston sixth in 25:54.1 and Diana Vanry seventh in 26:19.8.
K. Nast of Saratoga was eighth in 26:21.0 and, after Debbie Leale of San Jose finished ninth in 26:15.9, L. Nast was 10th in 26:31.1.
R. Nast was 11th overall in 22:20.4 to lead his family's effort for the day. He was fifth in the men's 4049 age division and L. Nast was fifth in the women's 4049 age group. K. Nast was the girls winner in the 13 and under age class with Saratoga's Amanda Speedy living up to her name by running second in the division in 29:01.2. It was the second straight year the young Nast has finished first in that age group.

Nast as individual age group winners in female action were: 1418—Jacqui Kemp of Los Gatos, 30:55.6; 1929—Bambury; 3039—Park; 4049—Lord; 5059—Debbie Follmar of Saratoga, 27:59.2; 6069—Trudi Hofmann of Millbrae, 33:01.1; and 70 and over—Joy Johnson of San Jose, 38:37.1.
