Media, cultures and artists blend easily at the latest de Saisset Museum exhibit on the Santa Clara University campus. Dark Matter: The Art of David Huffman features work on diverse media, including paper, ceramic sculptures and paintings expressing the pain of slavery. The artist uses Japanese animation and cartoon imagery to depict the trauma he says is at the core of his work.
Conversely, artist Enrique Chagoya uses one medium, paper, to express images from a variety of inspirations. Reverse Anthropology Archives: Works on Paper by Enrique Chagoya draws upon Mexican Catholicism, popular culture and advertising on varied media including lithographs, monotypes and etchings.
The two shows open April 17 and run through Aug. 1. A special opening reception, free to the public, on April 16 from 6 to 9 p.m., provides a sneak peek into the exhibit. Wait until May 27, and meet both artists during a walk-through, led by Huffman and Chagoya at 6 p.m.
