Following recent fatalities along Highway 9, Monte Sereno neighbors JoAnne Peth and Lana Malloy are forming a committee dedicated to improving pedestrian and bicycle safety along scenic Los Gatos­Saratoga Road. They are seeking residents of Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno, including homeowners who live on Highway 9, to join their campaign.

Experts discuss
Ohlone history

The city of Saratoga Historic Preservation Commission and the Saratoga Historical Foundation will sponsor a May 18 lecture about the Mumekwa Ohlone people who lived in what is now Saratoga as long as 6,000 years ago. Artifacts and reports from an archaeological dig conducted at 6th Street and Big Basin Way more than 30 years ago have been stored at San José State University since that time and have not been on public display. Presenters include Monica Arellano, a tribal vice chairwoman; Dr. Alan Leventhal, a tribal ethnohistorian, archaeologist and SJSU professor; and Malcom Toriumi, a school and community speaker. The free lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the Civic Theater at 13777 Fruitvale Ave.

Children's art at WVC library

The library at West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga, is featuring a special art exhibit created by children ages 2­5 who attend the WVC child development center. The exhibit is sponsored by the Teachers of Tomorrow Club and celebrates the "Week of the Young Child." Along with the children's art, there are photographs of the young artists engaging in the creative process, according to Yanghee Kim, outreach/
instruction librarian. The exhibit is on display until April 30.

Science institute
to host bug fair

The Youth Science Institute will host an insect fair at Sanborn Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 29. For more information, contact sanborn@ysi-ca.org.
