Rhythm Spirit is the title of San Jose Taiko's annual spring concert, but it would be an appropriate name for any of the taiko drum group's shows. The thundering pulse of Japanese taiko drumming sets the exhilarating rhythm for the ensemble's concerts, but there's more to the fun than just a good beat. The group's athletic, high-energy performances radiate a passion for taiko--and for the culture and history it represents--that is definitely catching.
San Jose Taiko brings that vibrant spirit to a brand new venue this year, presenting Rhythm Spirit April 23 and 25 at the Campbell Heritage Theatre.
The concert features the debut of a number of new compositions and arrangements created by company members Franco Imperial, Mike Fienen, Matt Ogawa and Roy Hirabayashi (also the managing director of San Jose Taiko).
Rhythm Spirit will also revisit favorite works from the group's repertoire, presenting many of them with new interpretations.
San Jose Taiko marked its 30th anniversary last year. As only the third-ever taiko group to be founded in North America, the ensemble has been an innovator in taiko from the beginning and has become known for its unique sound, which includes many nontraditional musical influences from around the world.
San Jose Taiko presents "Rhythm Spirit" April 23 and 25 at the Campbell Heritage Theatre, 1 W. Campbell Ave., Campbell. Tickets are $16$22. For more information, call 408.293.9344 or see www.taiko.org.
