Residents needed
to help plan relay

Saratoga residents are needed to help plan the first annual Saratoga Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society has implemented the 24-hour relay in thousands of U.S. cities for nearly 20 years as a way of raising funds for cancer research and support programs, showing support for cancer survivors, and remembering those who have died of cancer.

Relay participants will take turns walking or running around a Saratoga Springs track lined with memorial luminarias. The walk goes from 10 a.m. on May 22 until 10 a.m. May 23. Planning meetings will be held in room H01 of Saratoga High School at 20300 Herriman Ave. on May 3 and May 17. For more information, contact relay manager Kit Ganz at 408.688.0137 or kit.ganz@
cancer.org.

Dr. Deak to speak
at Saint Andrew's

Saint Andrew's School of Saratoga will be host a seminar entitled "Empowering Our Daughters," featuring Dr. JoAnn Deak on May 3 at 7 p.m. in the school's fireside room. The school is located at 13601 Saratoga Ave., at the corner of Fruitvale and Saratoga avenues.

Deak, the author of Girls Will Be Girls: Raising Confident and Courageous Daughters, is internationally known for her knowledge of what makes girls tick.

The event is open to the public and admission is free. For more information, call Sandra Gresham at 408.867.3785.

Commuters urged
to bike to work

May 20 is Bike to Work Day, a yearly event in which thousands of people throughout the Bay Area ride a bicycle to work or school. Bike to Work Day is sponsored by a number of different corporations, transportation authorities, city and county government agencies and bicycle clubs. Sponsors encourage cycling as a "healthy, fun, cheap and environmentally friendly" alternative to automobiles.

For more information, visit www.511.org/btwd. To sign up for free bicycling skills classes from the city of San Jose on May 14 and 15, contact John Brazil at john.brazil@sanjoseca.gov.
