Go Daddy-O
Dennis Nahat's piece joins three others for season finale
By Estelle Hayes
Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley wraps up its 200304 season with a little something for everyone at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. The season-ending program features a return of Artistic Director Dennis Nahat's tribute to swing dance, Go Daddy-O!, and three additional company premieres, all by American choreographers.

The program begins with Martha Graham's Frontier. A solo female performance dominates the stage for seven minutes, symbolizing "a journey into the unknown" for a 19th-century pioneer woman.

Fourteen dancers fill the stage for Vivaldi Concerto Grosso, set to Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto Grosso in D minor, Opus 3, No. 11. Lew Christensen's final creation in 1981 also includes a powerful duet as well as complicated patterns of duets, trios and quartets.

The most current of the pieces wraps up the show. Hallelujah Junction, created by New York City Ballet's Artistic Director Peter Martins, premiered in 2001. The black and white keys of two pianos on stage inspire the design of this piece. Dancers wear practice clothes of black and white, while intertwining choreography leads to a quiet pas de deux, a jazz duet and acrobatic leaps from the male soloist.

Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley performs its season-ending program May 69 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $22$68. Call 408.288.2800 or go to www.balletsanjose.org for more information.
