Government should do more for teachers
By Alex Liu
I am in the eighth grade at Redwood Middle School, and I think we can do more to keep the good teachers in the school district. Saratoga is a nice town, but it's hard to keep good teachers because of their low salaries and the high Saratoga living standard. How do we keep qualified teachers for the kids? We need to do more to promise the teachers they can maintain a decent living in the area.

The government has to step in to solve this issue like they do with many disadvantaged groups like veterans, college students, homeless families and mentally challenged people.

The government can build public houses for teachers. If we provide housing for them, they wouldn't have to worry about living here.

The government can give teachers coupons or discounts for their food. Teachers should receive better tax breaks. Teachers could take out loans with lower interest rates, like the VA loans for our veterans. With these benefits, teachers would be able to save more money to provide better support for their families.

I don't think it is necessary to raise taxes to help the teachers. When the government is doing its budget, it should consider teacher benefits as part of the budget planning.

Another idea is to keep bad teachers away from the school and reward job security and respect to those who do teaching well. We need to review the selection process of teachers. Don't let bad teachers stay because of their seniority.

Government should guarantee school funds to each school district, and give the school districts and teachers a better sense of security as to where their future is.

My suggestions need actions from the government. I love my teachers, and our quality of education comes from good teachers.
