Kiwanis awards
scholarships

Ten seniors from Los Gatos, Saratoga and Nova high schools will receive $1,000 each, for the exemplary turnaround of their lives and academic performance, from the Kiwanis Club of Los Gatos. These are students that for various reasons were not great scholars in their early high school years but have reformed their lives to become excellent academic students, according to Kiwanis member Don Wolf.

These students don't qualify for regular academic scholarships because of their early poor grades, Wolf said, so the scholarships are especially important to the students who now want to attend college and have demonstrated improvement as upperclassmen.

The Turnaround Scholarship awards will be distributed May 20 at 11:30 a.m. during a luncheon ceremony at the Los Gatos Lodge. The recipients and their families will be present to receive the scholarships and accolades from their academic advisors. The master of ceremonies will be Los Gatos City Councilman Mike Wasserman, a Kiwanis member. This year's leaders in the Turnaround Scholarship planning and funding include Trudy McCulloch, a Kiwanis member and principal of Los Gatos High School, as well as Robert Jones, a Kiwanis member and retired IBM engineer.

These Kiwanis Club scholarships are in addition to the eight $1,000 academic scholarships distributed to seniors at the same local high schools, making this year's commitment from the club a total of $18,000.

Financing for Kiwanis scholarships comes from many fundraising events, especially geared to raise money for youth. Wolf said the most visible of these is the Los Gatos Fiesta de Artes, sponsored by Kiwanis. This festival attracts top artists from far and wide to display and sell their art. Attendees will have the chance to enjoy the art and outdoor entertainment. The event will be on Aug. 1415 at the Civic Center in Los Gatos.
