The Saratoga City Council has authorized the Rosenow Spevacek Group, a redevelopment consultant firm in Orange County, to prepare a redevelopment feasibility study for the city.
The RSG Group will look at three commercial districts in the city—the Village area, the Quito Park area and the area between Prospect Avenue and the train tracks—and suggest improvements.
RSG is expected to prepare a report that will present a map of recommended boundaries of the redevelopment area and identify critical issues facing revitalization.
"The idea is, if we were to do this, can we improve an area economically?" said Saratoga Vice Mayor Kathleen King. "We're trying to find out if fresh business will come to the city if redevelopment happens."
The study is expected to take about 120 days after it has been authorized by the city manager. After the viability study, RSG will conduct public workshops to discuss the redevelopment plan.
The RSG Group has worked with the cities of Dublin and Stockton, and with the South Carlsbad Coastal Redevelopment program in the past.
The council had asked staff to explore the feasibility of employing a redevelopment agency at a March meeting.
Phase II of the redevelopment plan will look to bring interested businesses to the areas that the city wants to redevelop. It will also involve talking to local residents.
