Falcons, vikes place high at ccs badminton tournament

Badminton players from Saratoga, Lynbrook, Monta Vista and Cupertino had a lot to do with the outcomes of the Central Coast Section championship tournaments hosted by Monta Vista May 18­20.

Monta Vista teammates Emmanuel Pun and Ivan Lee entered the boys singles event as the top-seeded players, and their dominating play validated their rankings. After first-round byes, both players easily won two matches before squaring off in the finals. Lee won the first set 15-7, but Pun responded with consecutive wins, 15-12 and 15-11, for the gold medal.

Kevin Hur of Saratoga was part of the elite 14-player field. He won two out of four matches, tying for seventh place.

Tiffany Chu of Cupertino, the third seed, impressively won three straight matches before falling in the girls singles championship match to top seed Michelle Cheung of Mills.

Two Saratoga athletes, Teresa Lin and Caroline Cherng, advanced to the girls singles semifinals before being dropped into the consolation bracket. Lin won two of three sets from Gunn's Maya White to claim third place.

In boys doubles, Lin Shen and Edwin Lin of Saratoga won four of five matches and finished in third place.

The Lynbrook girls doubles team of Julie Cheng and Helen Ku advanced to the title match, but had to settle for the silver medal. They lost 15-7, 15-9 to Jessica Guinn and Sisi Chen of Palo Alto.

Meanwhile, Saratoga's team of Sophia Law and Vicki Liu won its first match, then lost the next, falling into the consolation bracket. The Falcon duo then ran off four straight wins, beating a Palo Alto team 15-8, 8-15, 17-14 to earn third place.

In mixed doubles, Thomas Chung and Alice Wen of Cupertino placed fourth and the Lynbrook tandem of Warren Lou and Kelly Perng finished tied for fifth.
