It was thriller or heartbreaker, depending upon which dugout you occupied.
For Bellarmine, beating Westmont 3-2 in 10 innings in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs was a thrilling victory. For the Warriors, though, it was nothing less than heartbreaking.
Both the Bells and the Warriors came out with their best guns and played their hearts out. The regulation seven-inning game stretched to the bottom of the 10th when Bellarmine eventually pushed in a run for the win 3-2.
Ricky Meinhold took the mound for the Warriors to face Bellarmine's Juan Gamboa in a battle of pitching aces. And the two certainly lived up to their billing. Gamboa went 10 innings to toss a five-hitter for the win, and Meinhold went nine and a third innings, scattering eight hits.
The only runs for the Warriors came off of Meinhold's bat in the top of the fourth. Thomas Acuna had walked and Meinhold helped his own cause with a two run home run down the right field line to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long, though, as the Bells came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Warriors were only able to pull together five hits on the day, but two came from center fielder Eric Oswald.
Oswald's first hit was a line drive to right field to open up the game. The other came in the top of the eighth when Oswald hit a two-out flare over the first baseman, but was forced at second on a ground ball by second baseman Mitch Monroe.
Brandon Simon did his best to help out the club with a 3-1 ground ball deep into the hole at short. The shortstop made a diving stop, but Simon was able to beat out the throw for an infield single.
Acuna picked up his only hit with a single to right in the top of the ninth, but was picked off by the Bells pitcher for the second out of the inning.
Meinhold gave up just six hits and struck out six in going the distance for the Warriors. He shut down the Bells facing only three batters in five of his nine-plus innings of work.
The Warriors finished off their season with a 19-11 record after taking second place in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. They were seeded No. 10 in CCS, losing the heartbreaker in the first round to No. 7 Bellarmine.
Bellarmine went on to upset the No. 2-seeded Serra Padres on May 22. The Bells will face Palo Alto on May 26, 4 p.m., at San Jose Municipal Stadium in the CCS semifinals.
