Bill Haselman, a 1984 graduate of Saratoga High School, is now a special instructor for the Boston Red Sox.
Haselman played in the Major Leagues as a catcher for the Red Sox and Texas Rangers after played college baseball at UCLA. Not long after he retired as a player, he was hired by the Sox in his current post.
Baseball analyst Peter Gammons wrote in ESPN Magazine's Diamond Notes that, "Despite his modesty and quiet demeanor, Haselman has obvious leadership skills. Insiders rave about his capacity for breaking down information and observations and putting them into a game plan." Some consider him to be managerial material.
Haselman played baseball for head coach Mike Costanzo at Saratoga. He was also the quarterback of the Saratoga football team under the direction of head coach Benny Pierce.
Sarkisian on West team
Kira Sarkisian, a Saratoga resident who attends Saint Francis High School, has been selected to play for the West team in the third annual McDonald's All-American High School Soccer games.

Rowers nail second
The Los Gatos Rowing Club's girls varsity lightweight 8 team won a berth in the national championships by finishing second at the regionals held May 8 at Lake Natomas in Sacramento.
The girls, who have been rowing together for the past three years, had to finish in the top two to qualify for nationals, and they did with their second-place finish in the 12-team field. Rowers from all of California and Arizona were represented in the event.
Members of the team, coached by Nathan Cravens, included Dora Chua of Saratoga High School, Katie Erickson and Emily Harper of Los Gatos High, Michelle Lewuerz and Alyssa Kehriotas of Mitty and Claire O'Conner, Sam Burns, Emily Muscatell, Mary Morici and Alex Werner of Presentation.
The girls varsity lightweight 8 was the only boat from the Los Gatos Rowing Club to qualify for nationals.
Burney leads Royals
The Overfelt baseball team, under the leadership of head coach Ray Burney of Saratoga, won 10 of its last 11 games to finish a solid season in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Royals finished the year with a 16-6 season record after posting a 13-5 league mark to finish in third place behind co-league champs Evergreen Valley and Andrew Hill.
"I was looking at finishing just above .500," said Burney of his preseason expectations for the Royals. "If we won 10 or 11 league games I would have looked at that as a success. But we won 13, and that was beyond my expectations."
Burney is in his fourth season as the Overfelt coach. He led his 2001 team to a division championship and, after a 9-9 finish last year, led this club to its solid finish despite starting five sophomores and two freshmen.
"It was a good season," said Burney, a Saratoga High graduate who still is an assistant on the Falcons' football coaching staff.
