Parents give away Grad Night
secrets—but not to the seniors
Shhh ... it's a secret.
But the Saratoga High School Grad Night Committee is letting the cat out of the bag—to everyone but Saratoga High School seniors, that is.
The committee is inviting interested community members, families and friends to stop by Saratoga High, 20300 Herriman Ave., on June 10 from 24:30 p.m. to preview this year's Grad Night decorations. The event is free and open to the public.
The party is planned as a fun, safe and sober place for 2004 graduates to celebrate. Under the leadership of Saratoga parents, including chairwoman Agnes Gregorian and co-chairs Kathy Frederickson and Vasanthi Jayaraman, parent volunteers have worked on the event since the fall, arranging for chaperones, organizing workers, constructing and installing the set and coordinating entertainment, prizes, memorabilia and food. The majority of the volunteers are parents of graduating seniors. Several local businesses are also involved in donating services, materials and food for the event.
The theme of the evening is being kept a secret. The school's quad area, small theater, small gymnasium and bathrooms will be transformed for the occasion. Last year's theme was New Orleans, and previous themes have included New York City, outer space and the wild, wild West. This year's decorating committee is headed by parents Bruna Byrne, Monica McAllister, Karen Loomis, Mohini Balakrishnan and Nadine Batanides.
DMV will close
for renovations
Going to the DMV—already an experience some would pass up in favor of dental surgery without Novocain—will become slightly less convenient this summer. The Los Gatos office, which handles more than 12,000 transactions each month, will close at the end of the day on June 18 for renovations.
The 20 employees from the office will be temporarily relocated to other local offices as needed. Until the office reopens Oct. 25, customers will be redirected to offices in Santa Clara, San Jose, Capitola, Redwood City and Fremont. Many transactions may be completed either by mail or online at www.dmv.ca.gov.
Under 21 to host
event in Los Gatos
The Under 21 Club, an offshoot of the "Alive ... and Loving Life" movement, is holding its second event at the Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company on June 4 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
The acoustic, unplugged show for students from LGHS, Leigh, Archbishop Mitty, Bellarmine, Saratoga and other local high schools is focused on providing a late-night alternative to drinking and drugs.
For more information about the Under 21 Club, email under21club@comcast.net.
Building Bridges
planning session
The Building Bridges Committees of the Rotary Club are organizing a planning session on June 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Baltic Room at the West Valley College Campus Center. The meeting is for committee members and others who have contributed to the program. A video of last year's program will be shown. City, college and Rotary Club leaders will make brief comments at the function.
