Two Memorial Day
weekend accidents

The Memorial Day weekend is one holiday period that accounts for a large number of accidents involving drunken drivers. This year, Saratoga had two major accidents in which alcohol may have been involved.

A 17-year-old Saratoga resident driving a sedan crashed into a tree as he made a 90-degree turn from Trinity Avenue onto Malcolm Avenue on May 29 around 5 p.m.

"He was driving at an unsafe speed around a corner," said a sheriff's deputy. The driver wasn't injured, but the sheriff's station is investigating a possible DUI.

There was one another DUI-related crash over the Memorial Day weekend. A 23-year-old man crashed his car into a parked car and a house. He is a San Jose resident and was suspected of driving a stolen vehicle. He was arrested.

Independence Day
in Azule Park

An Independence Day observance will be held July 4 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Saratoga's Azule Park, adjacent to Blue Hills Elementary School. The observance is being organized for the second year by residents around Blue Hills School. Approximately 250 people attended the celebration last year.

The event includes a salute to the flag, the ringing of the freedom bell 13 times, remembering veterans and the singing of patriotic songs. The celebration ends with a parade around the park. For information, contact John Mallory at 408.252.7447 or Mallory58@aol.com.
