Outta Here! Saratoga High School graduates celebrate
By Lisa Toth
As freshmen they avoided stepping on the Falcon painted in the quad for fear of "the curse," and the girls were still taller than many of the boys. Their academic careers progressed as they dealt with the repercussions of 9-11 terrorist attacks, and they ditched school to get their driver's licenses.

They sweated over SATs and searching for dates to dances. They survived cheating scandals and discussions about academic integrity. They prayed for the recovery of Kathleen Davey, and they led many athletic teams to Central Coast Section victories.

And they came together one last time on June 10 to celebrate their graduation from Saratoga High School.

To celebrate the accomplishments of the class of 2004, the outfield of the high school baseball field was packed with babies, grandparents, relatives, parents and siblings. With the girls dressed in white caps and gowns and the boys decked out in navy blue, the seniors soaked in the events of the school's 43rd commencement exercises.

The school band played "Pomp and Circumstance" as the graduates paraded onto the field. Proud parents held video cameras above their heads to capture the moment, while other attendees carried bouquets of roses and balloons for their scholars.

Under the setting sun, Student Body President Grace Hsu reminded classmates that 2004 has been an extremely good year. She said now the biggest question looming on the minds of seniors is, "What is in store for us?"

The last few weeks of classes have been a time of reflection for seniors of the best and worst times of attending the No. 1 public high school in the state. Hsu reminded her peers to go on to succeed by doing what they do best, "seize life by the horns and take on the world."

Principal Kevin Skelly introduced valedictorians Michael Y. Lin and Patrick Shih and salutatorians Nidhi Bhat and Ada Yee. Skelly also presented the senior class officers—President Vanessa Wong, Vice President Grace Yang, Secretary Brianne Fong and Treasurer Josephine Chan.

And the cheers of the crowd—along with the horns, whistles and cowbells—drowned out of the names of the recipients as they were handed their diplomas ... ready to conquer the world.
