It's not a trick—Halloween could be a treat in Village
By Kaustuv Basu
The Saratoga Village needs more foot traffic.

The city's Chamber of Commerce is now working on a plan to get more people to visit downtown during Halloween celebrations. The event is tentatively called Witchy Walk-A-Bout and will be held the Saturday before Halloween.

"It will essentially be a sidewalk procession for children. They will visit all the merchants on Big Basin Way and then come back to the Chamber office. We are constantly trying to think of ideas so that we can get more people downtown," said Kristin Davis, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.

"The children will bring their parents and they will get a chance to interact with merchants," said Davis.

John Marian of Big Basin Chiropractic is the business owner who thought of the idea. He said that it was just another activity to attract more people downtown. "Hopefully there will be some city involvement, too," he said.

The merchants would be in charge of distributing candy to the children. "It is an opportunity for kids to trick or treat. It is also a safe place for them to dress up and have fun. Instead of a dark neighborhood, they can walk around in a lighted area. The parents will actually get a chance to see the kind of businesses we have down here," said Marian.

A committee is being formed by the Chamber to organize the Halloween celebrations.

"Earlier we talked about a street closure, but that won't happen any more," said Marian. The money required for organizing the event is expected to come from the Saratoga Rotary Club. The Chamber will provide staff and work out the logistics.

"You need a draw to get more people downtown. It could be art in the park, music in the park," said Marian.

Or Halloween.
