Voters must understand
the proposed utility tax
The voters of Saratoga must understand that this utility tax placed on the November ballot is not "tax deductible" on their federal income tax. The 5 percent is on all utilities, including telephone, and in many cases will far exceed the $20 per month that is mentioned. The money will go directly into the General Fund, where it can be used for any purpose, regardless of what a few supervisors say now. Remember, this is a 10-year tax. In addition, the voters should ask, "Why did the city defer the maintenance?" Deferring maintenance is not a good business practice at any time.
