Verdun P. Romer Sr.

Former Campbell Union High School District administrator Verdun P. Romer Sr. died July 8 in Vineland, N.J. He was 86.

Born in San Francisco, he resided most of his life in Saratoga before moving to Medford, N.J., eight years ago. He is the son of the late Robert and Mabel Romer.

Romer was a graduate of UC-Berkeley. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe with the anti-aircraft and glider corps. After the war, he joined the Army Reserves and retired in 1976 with the rank of colonel after 35 years of service to his country. He worked in education for 28 years. He was the first principal of Prospect High School in Saratoga, from 1971 until his retirement in 1980. Prior to that time, he was the principal of Blackford High School in San Jose for 10 years. Romer was a longtime member of the Kiwanis of Saratoga.

He is survived by sons Verdun P. Romer Jr. of Saratoga and John D. Romer of St. Louis, Mo., and daughter Elizabeth J. Gartenmayer of Medford, N.J. He is also survived by four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

His funeral service will be held on Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., where Col. Romer will receive full military honors.
