Emerson Lin of Saratoga wasn't quite able to take home the gold in the Saratoga Junior Open Tennis Tournament, but he didn't leave empty handed.
Lin advanced all the way to the semifinal round of the boys 14-year-old division, but was defeated there by Alexander Liu. Lin went on to win in a playoff for third place over Chris Ho of Los Altos. Lin defeated Austin Andres out of San Jose in straight sets to advance into the semifinal round.
Lin wasn't the only Saratoga tennis player to finish strong in the tourney. Andrew Hsieh lost in straight sets in the opening round of the boys 12-year-old singles division, but came back with a vengeance to win the consolation bracket. He defeated Ryan Fong in only two sets, winning 6-4 both times, for the win in the consolation round and he topped Jimmy Castellanos, also from Saratoga, in the semifinal round and Trevor Watson in the quarterfinals.
Castellanos downed Michael Kung out of Sunnyvale 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket before losing to Hsieh.
Ryan Chow of San Jose wasn't able to claim a victory in the regular boys 10-year-old tournament, but found himself victorious in the consolation playoffs. Chow defeated David Bell in straight sets without giving up a single point in the quarterfinals, then Chow met Michael Hoffman from Atherton and topped him in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Chow went up against Valentine Spokojnij in the finals and walked away with his consolation championship after taking two sets from Spokojnij 6-1, 6-0.
Lindsey Marsh, of Saratoga, found herself battling for the title in the girls 14-year-old division of the open, but she could not best Michelle Lam of San Francisco. Marsh was toppled in two of three sets, but still went home with second place. Marsh took all hopes of a championship away from Kristin Fleming when she defeated her in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinal round. Marsh also put down Courtney Chin in a pair of sets in the quarterfinal round.
Annie Lee of Saratoga fought her heart out for the championship in the girls 12-year-old singles division, but was downed by Melissa Kobayakawa of Cupertino in the finals. Lee toppled Kelly Chen of Milpitas in the semifinals and Vynnie Kong in the quarterfinals, before going home with second place.
Tara Nguyen of Saratoga reached the semifinal round of the consolation bracket after defeating Cynthia Chiu in straight sets, but Sara Quero of Pleasanton would not allow her to proceed any further and Nguyen was defeated in the semifinal round.
Julie Leong and Stacy Yam, both of San Jose, met each other in the final round of the girls 10-year-old singles division, but only one could walk away victorious. Leong won the title, but Yam gave her quite a battle, taking the first set before dropping the last two. Leong defeated Ruri Kobayakawa in straight sets in the semifinal round and Brooke Irish in the quarterfinals before she winning the championship.
