The Saratoga Library has a problem—mud tracked in to the library by students from the nearby Redwood Middle School as they walk through the orchard. When the orchard is being irrigated during the spring, the problems can get worse.
Library staff and city staff have been meeting in the last few months to look at a more permanent solution to the problem.
At a city council meeting on Aug. 4, Assistant City Manager Lori Tinfow presented a report on possible solutions to the problem.
A sign is being put up near Fruitvale Avenue not far from where the pathway starts asking library users to stay on the pavement. The sign is to be installed by the public works department and will be in place before Redwood Middle school reopens on Aug. 21.
The library is also looking at the possibility of posting a volunteer at the site to guide the children and make sure that they do not stray on to the orchard. The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries might be asked to post a volunteer there.
Tinfow indicated that the library will be using dirt removing mats and some other devices so that the children can clean their shoes before they walk into the library.
Tinfow said that if the problem persists there might be a move to install a 4 feet fence along the side of the orchard that borders Fruitvale Avenue. The length of the fence would be about 50 feet.
"The problem increases during the spring when the orchard is being irrigated," said Tinfow.
