The fish were in the water. Actually, technically, they weren't fish. They were mammals.
The Saratoga Dolphins met the Brookside Waves at Saratoga Woods for the "Big Swim Meet," and Saratoga came out of the meet making a little history.
After winning their fourth meet of the season, 293.5-177.5, the Dolphins had claimed more wins in any other season for at least fifteen years, which is as far back as the records go, according to coach Marie LaForge.
Prior to their win over Brookside on July 10, the Saratoga Dolphins had defeated two Palo Alto teams, Green Meadow and Eichler, and Laurelwood of Santa Clara. With just a dual meet against a Cupertino Hills club team and the season-ending, six-team championship meet left on their Junipero Serra Swim League schedule, the Dolphins had a perfect 4-0 record.
"One reason we are winning this year is that we have top swimmers spread out evenly over every age group," explained LaForge, who has coached at the Saratoga Woods pool for 10 years.
Another reason for the swim club's success, Coach LaForge believes, is its fun, relaxed environment, which keeps the older swimmers coming back.
Of the Dolphins' 124 swimmers, none are "year round" swimmers and the amount of "older" swimmers is starting to increase.
This year 23 are competing in the 15-18 age group. These "older" swimmers come from four high schools, Prospect, Westmont, Mitty and Presentation.
LaForge, who lives down the street from the pool and has three of her own children on the team, has helped maintain the environment by using only ex-swimmers as assistant coaches.
The Dolphins' victories cannot be credited to any one swimmer, as a team effort has allowed the Dolphins to make waves this season.
Four Dolphins Paris Muise, Gabrielle Vasquez, Christina Kearney and Kelly DeBarr posted victories in all three of their events in the meet against Brookside.
Many other swimmers did not win every event they participated in, but were able to take first place or second. Those swimmers included Bradley Newton, Marcos Miranda, Anders Rathjens, Danielle Barsanti, Maura Cantoni, Susan Cantoni, Alex Cox, Galen Rathjens, George Shoemaker, Maggie Ball, Jessica Dean. and Margot Kenter.
Other Dolphins who placed first or second against Brookside were Nicole Mackenzie, Gregory Kenter, Stephanie Fong, Sarabella Muise, Alex Hehir, Jonathon Cox, Kristin LaForge, Shannon Fleming, Keith Buchner, Michael Fleming, Justin LaForge, Jessika Berryessa, Marlena Vasquez, Celeste Weber, Stephen Ridder, Jimmy Kearney and Amanda Heinisch.
In addition to the individual events, the Dolphins' relay teams showed well against Brookside. They won four of the six relays in the meet.
