Boy Scout Troop 508 in Saratoga has defied all the odds. Whereas national statistics show that only four scouts in 100 earn their Eagle award, six scouts in the same grade in Troop 508 received this top honor this year.

These six young men, all recent Saratoga High School graduates, completed projects serving schools and camps in Saratoga and Cupertino. Their projects combined took more than 1,000 hours of volunteer time.

"Troop 508 is proud of these six fine Eagle Scouts and their continuing contributions to society," said Cynthia Chang, who has served as the troop's committee chairwoman since 2000 and is currently serving her sixth year on the board of trustees for the Los GatosSaratoga School District. "I am very proud of our students."

Chris Chang's Eagle project was done at Camp Costanoan, a residential camp for disabled children and adults in Stevens Creek County Park. Chris built a set of two shelters for poolside benches, providing relief from the sun for both campers and staff. Chris enlisted the help of approximately 20 people for his project who worked more than 188 hours. Chris plans to attend UC-Berkeley in the fall.

Shenje Hshieh also lent a hand to Camp Costanoan in several areas. He upgraded the camp's sprinkler system, planted deer-resistant and child-safe plants and built a bench for campers to sit on as they enjoyed the new gardens. His project took eight people working 154 hours. Shenje has enrolled in University of California, San Diego, starting in the fall.

Camp Costanoan happily received the help of still one more hard-working Eagle Scout, as Michael Lin also chose to do his community-service project there. With the help of 14 people working 167 hours, he replaced two temporary steel benches with three wooden benches designed for ease of use by handicapped children and adults. These benches were placed in an area with a pleasing view of the redwood trees, the pool and the amphitheater. Michael looks forward to starting school at Stanford University in the fall.

David Chen chose to give back to his alma mater, Saratoga High School. His project consisted of beautifying the area next to the school's new library. With the help of 13 people working a combined 89 hours, he prepared an area and planted shrubs, flowers and other plants. David will attend California Institute of Technology in Pasadena in the fall.

Jason Glasser also chose to help beautify Saratoga High School, with focus on the school's entrance. He broke up and removed a deteriorating patio, prepared the area for a new lawn and plants, and designed and built a hexagonal planter box with seats and a tree to provide shade. Jason has enrolled in Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, starting in the fall.

Alex Crawford saw a need at Argonaut Elementary School and decided to help fill it. He designed and built two benches with planter boxes at either end. The planters will allow teachers and students to do plant science studies, and the benches provide seating for students, staff and parents. Alex received help from approximately 20 people who worked more than 150 hours to facilitate science projects at Argonaut and make the area more comfortable for all. Alex plans to attend UCLA in the fall.
