Residents of and drivers on Franklin Avenue have known for years what the city is now working to remedy: Franklin Avenue needs some work. All over the road, cracks have appeared on the asphalt, making any car ride a bumpy road.
And Franklin isn't the only street in Saratoga that needs repairs.
City staff has recognized the problem and is now ready to do something about it.
Starting later this month, the city will work on six city streets as part of a pavement management program. Some of the worst affected streets will be repaved as part of the project.
The project will take four to six weeks to complete.
Work will begin shortly on Allendale Avenue, Andrew Court, Douglass Lane, Franklin Avenue, Norton Road and Sigal Drive.
"It will be a curb to curb project," said Morgan Kessler, assistant engineer at the city's public works department. The streets that were chosen for repairs were in the worst possible condition, he said.
"We have a computer program that keeps track of all the streets in Saratoga," Kessler said. "Every three or four years, we examine each street. This is fed into a computer database. That gives us a priority list while deciding on the streets to be repaired."
All the streets that have been marked for improvement will get an asphalt overlay. The entire project is expected to be complete four to five weeks after it starts.
"There will be traffic control on all streets. If there are street closures it won't be for very long," said Kessler.
He said that Allendale Avenue, one of the busiest streets in Saratoga, is being repaved after 15 years. The project will be funded by the city's general fund.
City officials say that once a street is paved, it is good for close to 20 years.
Residents on these streets will be notified some days ahead about parking rules while work is in progress.
