Teen runners claim 'gold' in Dammit Run
By Kevin Sparrer
More than 600 runners were going for the gold on Aug. 14, but they weren't in Athens. They were in Los Gatos taking part in the 32nd Dammit Run.

A total of 386 men and 245 women made this year's dusty five-mile trek from the Los Gatos High School track, through the foothills, up to Lexington Reservoir and back again, but only one could come out on top.

That one was 18-year-old Patrick Parsel, who completed the difficult up-and-down course in an impressive 28:40.

Following behind Parsel in second place was 22-year-old Rigoberto Ramirez, who crossed the finish line at 29:17. David Beauley, 29, took third with a time of 29:59.

As in the men's division, an 18-year-old was the top female finisher. Former Presentation High School distance ace Melissa Grelli left the rest of the women behind.

Grelli, who leaves this week to begin her college career at Georgetown University, finished the race in 33:30. The next fastest women were 17-year-old Alicia Follmar, a Saratoga High senior, at 34:46, and Traci Mitchell, 34, at 35:12.

Grelli crossed the finish line with her high school running coach Chris Cozort, who placed 23rd overall. Cozort, 28, won the Dammit in 2003 with a time of 28:09.

As in 2003 the Follmar family had two division winners. Alicia again was tops among high school girls, and her mother Debbie Follmar was the first woman in the 50-54 bracket to cross the finish line. Debbie's time of 40:07 was 14th best among all women.

Jean Pommier, 40, earned a victory in the men's masters division with a time of 30:25. Pommier also won his age division (40-44) and came in sixth overall.

Julie Rohloff, 43, was the women's masters champion with a 35:17 clocking and finished fourth overall.

The Dammit Run is sponsored each year by the Los Gatos Athletic Association to raise money for the Los Gatos High School Track Repair Fund.
